Music both old and new, but all of it inspired by the timeless modal harmony of medieval and Mediterranean cultures: this is the subject of John Williams's brilliant guitar disc for Sony, which also features his debut as a composer. The main work is his own "Aeolian Suite" for guitar and chamber orchestra, based on both original and 14th-century tunes (one of which, the "Saltarello," appeared on early-music pioneer David Munrow's disc called Instruments of the Middle Ages). The suite is a lovely piece of writing, deftly composed, and neither tacky nor pretentious. It's paired with an inspired assortment of spiritually related but diverse arrangements and original pieces by Satie, Theodorakis, Domeniconi, and an emotionally intense four-movement work called "Stélé," by Australian composer Phillip Houghton. Naturally, Williams performs each piece expertly, but most important, he makes his instrument sing, and that's just what the music demands. Simply super. --David Hurwitz

Según éstos ha conseguido dominar casi todas las técnicas de ejecución de su instrumento, incluyendo tapping a dos manos, sweep picking, volume swells, tap harmonics, etc. Además es reconocido como un gran profesor de guitarra, entre cuyos alumnos se incluyen Steve Vai, David Bryson (Counting Crows), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Larry LaLonde (Primus, ex-Possessed), Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogen (Third Eye Blind), Alex Scolnick (Testament), el ex-Megadeth,Marty Friedman, entre otros. Joe Satriani nació el 15 de julio de 1956 en Westbury, New York. Se decidió por la guitarra tras escuchar a Jimi Hendrix. Durante los '70 Satriani se mudó a Berkeley, California persiguiendo una carrera como músico. Fue inspirado por músicos como Allan Holdsworth y Lennie Tristano. Cuando su amigo y antiguo alumno alcanzó la fama tocando con David Lee Roth en 1986, Vai alabó a Satriani en multitud de entrevistas a revistas de guitarra. Su segundo álbum editado en 1987 y llamado "Surfing with the alien" se considera uno de los 5 mejores álbumes de guitarra instrumental del rock, conteniendo temas como "Always with me, always with you" o "Midnight". En 1989, la canción de Satriani "One Big Rush" (originalmente lanzada como "Flying in a Blue Dream" fue incluida en la banda sonora de Say Anything. En 1994, Satriani ingresa en Deep Purple sustituyendo a Ritchie Blackmore durante la gira de la banda. En 1996, Satriani forma el G3, una gira de conciertos de tres guitarristas instrumentales de rock originalmente Satriani, Steve Vai, y Eric Johnson. Satriani es criticado habitualmente por la "esterilidad" de su música. Al momento de crear es muy variado y utiliza todo lo que sabe con tal de expresar lo que quiere. Este adjetivo es causado por su música sencilla, donde muchos encuentran clichés en exceso y pocos cambios armónicos. Esta presentacion fue muy especial ya que ademas de interpretar los temas de su disco Strange Beautiful Music tambien ejecuto temas pedidos especialmente por sus fans en una encuesta realizada en su pagina web unos meses antes de realizar el tour.

¿Qué es Hoshin Kanri?

Explicación
Hoshin Kanri (HK) es un modelo de planificación cíclica y un concepto de gerencia de origen japonés. Se aplica en dos niveles:
A nivel del planeamiento estratégico.

Una pequeña cantidad de objetivos corporativos claves de largo alcance se planean sistemáticamente. Se llaman Objectivos de avanzada, y duran típicamente 2 a 5 años con pequeños cambios. Se enfocan en la realización de mejoras significativas del desempeño, o a realizar cambios sustantivos en la forma en que opera una organización, un proceso clave del negocio, o un departamento.
A nivel cotidiano.

La mayor parte del tiempo de una organización debe ser dedicado a velar por el funcionamiento del negocio. Realizando las actividades de valor añadido de los procesos dominantes del negocio, que satisfacen el propósito de la organización. Estos fundamentos de negocio cotidianos se deben supervisar sobre una base diaria en todas las partes de la organización. De esta forma es cómo los responsables de un proceso pueden tomar la acción correctiva en tiempo real para la mejora contínua del proceso (Kaizen).
El acercamiento de dos niveles del Hoshin Kanri se considera uno de los pilares de la filosofía del Total Quality Management (Gestión de calidad total) TQM. El método también se puede pensar como el uso del Ciclo de Deming (PDCA/PDSA) , (planifique, haga, revise, corrija) sobre el proceso de gerencia. La revisión Hoshin del plan del año anterior es la base (ESTUDIE) para el nuevo plan anual Hoshin (PLANIFIQUE). Este plan se conecta en cascada hacia abajo en la organización vía los cuadros anuales de planeamiento. En cada nivel, la política se traduce y se pone en ejecución (HAGA) en políticas, metas y acciones para el siguiente nivel. Estos cuadros anuales de planeamiento entonces se revisan periódicamente (publicación mensual). Las causas de cualquier diferencia entre los resultados esperados y los reales se identifican, se discuten y se concuerdan. Se identifica la acción correctiva (CORRIJA).

La palabra japonesa Hoshin significa: un curso, una política, un plan, una puntería. La palabra Kanri significa administración, gerencia, control, carga de, cuidado para. El HK de proceso se compara a menudo a las agujas del compás que calibran. Al HK a veces también se le llama: Despliegue de la política o planificación Hoshin.

Origen de la filosofía de Hoshin Kanri. Historia
El proceso Hoshin se desarrolló en Japón durante los años 60 a partir de prácticas de gerencia de gestión de la calidad en la Compañías Bridgestone Tire, Toyota, Nippon Denso, Komatsu, y Matsushita. Fue influenciado fuertemente por el Planificar-Hacer-Comprobar-Corregir del ciclo Deming, la Gerencia por Objetivos de Peter Drucker, el nuevo concepto divisional de General Motors, y las conferencias del Dr. Juran sobre gerencia general. El término Hoshin Kanri se aceptó extensamente en Japón en mediados de los años setenta. A finales de los años 70 la experiencia acumulada en la industria había sido destilada en una formalización de los principios, y aparecieron los primeros libros en el tema. El primer simposio sobre HK fue llevado a cabo en Japón en 1981, y en 1988 la asociación japonesa de estándares publicó una serie de trabajos que se ocupaban de las prácticas del HK. Durante los años 80, el concepto se saltó a los E.E.U.U. Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble, Florida Power & Light, Intel, y Xerox comenzaron a implementar sus propias versiones de ejecución del HK.

Establecimiento de la política anual y de las políticas de mediano y largo plazo.
Difundir la filosofía fundamental de la compañía (valores) y su política básica de calidad.
Conversión de la política metodológica en la política objetiva.
La composición de la política.
Dos estilos del despliegue del objetivo - de arriba hacia abajo y abajo-arriba.
Desdoblamiento del objetivo y “recoge-bola”. Un proceso de discusión antes de que la política finalmente se decida, en donde la bola de la política (primer bosquejo de la política) se lanza hacia adelante y hacia atrás entre los encargados superiores y medios antes de que se tome una decisión final. Auditoría interna del control de calidad de la gerencia superior.

Fortalezas del Hoshin Kanri. Beneficios
Enfoca la rganización entera en pocos puntos vitales, en lugar de los muchos puntos triviales.
Comunica claramente la visión estratégica compartida.
Participativo. Crea el alineamiento y la participación hacia objetivos de avanzada.
Integra y anima a la cooperación transfuncional para alcanzar los temas de avanzada.
El progreso de los planes se supervisa cuidadosamente. Esto permite una respuesta a omisiones de ejecución y a la acción correctiva.
El planeamiento estratégico es sistemático: El formato de los planes se unifica vía estándares.
El proceso del planeamiento se mejora contínuo.
Énfasis en el análisis y cuidadoso entendimiento de los problemas que ocurrieron durante el ciclo anterior de planeamiento/de desglose. Permite el Aprendizaje Organizacional.

Limitaciones de Hoshin Kanri. Desventajas
Es necesaria una puesta en práctica muy rígida. Difícil de lograr en algunas culturas.
Requiere de la alta gerencia un compromiso de largo plazo, paciencia, ayuda y una energía permanente.
Es relativamente estática. Los objetivos de avanzada deben ser estables durante un período de cinco años.
Supuestos del concepto de Hoshin Kanri. Condiciones
La mejor manera de obtener el resultado deseado es asegurarse que todos los empleados de la organización entienden la dirección de largo plazo y que están trabajando según un plan ligado para hacer de la visión una realidad.
Hay mediciones fundamentales del proceso que se deben supervisar para asegurar el mejoramiento contínuo de los procesos dominantes del negocio.
Las actividades de avanzada pueden realmente ser realizadas sólo cuando las actividades claves del negocio están bajo un control razonable.
